Matthias Wollong

Matthias Wollong (born December 31, 1968 in Berlin ) is a German violinist.

Matthias Wollong began playing the violin at the age of five. After training in Werner Scholz's master class , he went to Switzerland from 1987 to 1989 to study with the violinist and teacher Tibor Varga . During this time he performed as a soloist in Germany, France and Switzerland. With the victory of the violin competition named after his teacher, he finished his studies there. Other prizes, such as the main prize at the "Joseph Joachim" violin competition in Austria, followed.

As a soloist he has worked with conductors Ádám Fischer , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos , Marek Janowski , Vladimir Jurowski and Sir Colin Davis and the ORF Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Weimar together .

At a young age he was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra . Matthias Wollong has been the first concertmaster of the Saxon State Orchestra since 1999, after having held the same position with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 1999. During the summer months he played as first concertmaster in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival .

Wollong devotes himself intensively to chamber music. He appeared in various formations at the Salzburg Easter Festival and at the International Shostakovich Days Gohrisch. As a chamber musician, he has published radio and CD recordings, such as the complete works for violin by Othmar Schoeck and Wilhelm Furtwängler , the piano trios by Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven (Genuin). In 2008 he received an " Echo Klassik " for the recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's chamber music .

Since 2003 he has been working closely as a conductor and soloist with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, with whom he has toured Europe, the Far East and North and South America.

As a conductor he led the German Chamber Orchestra, the Thuringia Philharmonic and made guest appearances with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra .

Wollong holds a professorship at the Liszt School of Music Weimar , where he also lives. He plays an Andrea Guarneri violin from 1676.
