The Berliner Symphoniker are a symphony orchestra in Berlin . The orchestra began its concert activities on September 1, 1967 as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra . The name was changed to Berliner Symphoniker in the 1992/93 season. The orchestra is not to be confused with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (BSO, today: Konzerthausorchester Berlin ).

history

In 1966 the "Berlin Symphony Orchestra" and the "German Symphony Orchestra" merged and began in 1967 under the new name "Symphonic Orchestra Berlin" (SOB) with their first chief conductor Carl August Bünte, concert activities in the western part of the city. The SOB took in the so-called border commuters who became unemployed after the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, those musicians who lived in the western part of the city and had lost their jobs in the eastern part of the city when the border was closed.

In the 1970s, under the management of Gideon Rosengarten, with the introduction of family concerts, a new concert format with music-educational content was created. In the following years, the “SOB” became the first Berlin orchestra to develop a music-pedagogical profile with concerts in schools and concerts for children and families.

In the 1992/93 season the name was changed to "Berliner Symphoniker".

In 2004, the state of Berlin decided to discontinue the financial support, since then the orchestra has had to get along without public subsidies.

The orchestra undertook numerous international tours, including several appearances in Asia, Africa and South America. In 2007 the Berliner Symphoniker were nominated for the Latin Grammy Award as Best Classical Album for their CD Latin Music .
