Theodore Bloomfield
Theodore Bloomfield (born June 14, 1923 in Cleveland , † April 1, 1998 in Warrenton , Oregon ) was an American conductor and composer .
Bloomfield studied at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and with Pierre Monteux at the Juilliard School . In 1945 he made his debut with the New York Little Symphony Orchestra . On May 11, 1946, he conducted a chamber orchestra from the Juilliard School at the premiere of Charles Ives' 1906 piece The Unanswered Question .
From 1946 to 1952 he worked in Cleveland. He then directed various American symphony orchestras: from 1955 to 1959 the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Portland , Oregon , and from 1959 to 1963 the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Rochester , New York .
From 1964 to 1966 he worked at the Hamburg State Opera . In 1966 Bloomfield succeeded Lovro von Matačić as General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera , but left in October 1967 after a conflict with the orchestra.
From 1975 to 1982 he directed the Berlin Symphony Orchestra .
In 1976 Bloomfield received the German Critics' Prize .
Since 1990 he has lived in retirement in Warrenton on the Oregon coast , where he died on April 1, 1998 of a heart attack. Bloomfield's estate is held at Portland State University.
