Alun Francis
Alun Francis (born September 29, 1943 ) is a Welsh conductor .
Life
Alun Francis began his career in 1966 when he became chief conductor of the Ulster Orchestra . He held this office for ten years. In 1978 he conducted the world premiere of the opera Gabriella di Vergy by Gaetano Donizetti in the Queen Elisabeth Hall in London . From 1979 to 1985 he was general music director of the Northwest Chamber Orchestra in Seattle , before becoming artistic advisor to the Ensemble Opera Forum in Enschede for two years (until 1987) .
From 1987 to 1990 he worked in Herford as chief conductor and general music director of the Northwest German Philharmonic . He was chief conductor of the Haydn Orchestra ( Bozen ), the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano "Giuseppe Verdi" in Milan , before he became chief conductor of the Thuringia Philharmonic in Gotha in 2003 . He left there in April 2008, eight months before his contract expired. After that he was conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM until 2010 .
In his 40-year career, Alun Francis has conducted around 200 orchestras and has presented numerous records and CD productions, including works by Francis Poulenc and, played by the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate , by Otto Klemperer (Symphonies No. 1 and 2 as well as 4 symphonic works).
Honors
- Alun Francis is the winner (2000) of the first prize of the Cannes Classical Award in the CD premiere category for his recordings of all symphonies by Darius Milhaud with the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra .
