Elisabeth Harnik (* 1970 in Graz ) is an Austrian pianist, singer, composer and music organizer who is active in the field of new improvisation music and contemporary music. She regards composing and improvising as "an interplay between the calculated and the unforeseen: reflecting on the sound vocabulary that has arisen - be it through preconceived or spontaneous interventions - and tracing an unconscious inner structure."

Live and act

Harnik had his first music lessons at the age of five; at the age of ten she began to play the piano. She studied classical piano at what was then the Graz University of Music. As a pianist, she initially worked as an interpreter of new music.

Inspired by a workshop with Pauline Oliveros, she studied composition with Beat Furrer at today's Graz University of Art until 2006 . “A central point in her compositional work is the examination of self-imposed rules, their changes and their breaking.” Her compositions are performed by ensembles such as Ensemble Zeitfluss Graz, Ensemble 09 Linz, RSO Vienna, Ensemble PHACE Vienna, Klangforum Wien , Ensemble Reconsil Vienna, Trio Amos Wien, Trio Eis Wien, Thürmchen Ensemble Köln, Fidelio Trio London, Cantus Ensemble Zagreb and Ensemble mise-en NY . Together with the writer Olga Flor , she wrote the music theater piece Kugelstein (2005/2007).

In addition, Harnick became interested in improvised music under the impression of an encounter with Joëlle Léandre and had lessons with this, Peter Kowald , Lauren Newton and David Moss . Separated from her compositional activity, she has been working as an improvisation musician since 1996. As a soloist and in ensembles, she is represented at various international festivals such as V: NM Festival, Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon , Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen , Artacts Festival St. Johann, Piano Festival Soundgrube Vienna, Musicacoustica Beijing, Beethovenfest Bonn , Alpenglow Festival London, Umbrella Music Festival Chicago, Comprovise Festival Cologne.

In 2010, Harnik founded the Kunsthaltestelle Streckhammerhaus association with the visual artist Heidi M. Richter ; the resulting works "oscillate between performances with live painting, film screenings with music and concerts in the classical sense." a. Musicians like Christian Weber , John Tchicai , Michael Zerang , Fred Lonberg-Holm , Dave Rempis and Ken Vandermark . Harnik lives in Gams near Frohnleiten ( Styria ).
