Michael Zerang
Michael Zerang (born November 16, 1958 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American percussionist, drummer and composer who has emerged in the field of creative jazz and improvisation music. According to Allmusic , he plays a colorful set of drums that enriches the music rather than propelling it.
Live and act
Zerang, whose parents immigrated from Assyria , attended Wright College for Liberal Arts and Music Courses in his hometown from 1977 to 1978 , and then studied music theory and composition (with Don Malone ) at Roosevelt University until 1982 . In addition, he trained privately and in workshops, for example with Karl Berger .
He has been a professional musician since 1976, initially in formations with Kent Kessler , and has been touring internationally since 1981. He was involved in the recording of more than 40 albums and played in bands such as the Vandermark Quartet , Dream Cheese , In Zenith and Broken Wire . Zerang also worked with Fred Anderson , Mats Gustafsson , Jaap Blonk , Barre Phillips , Scott Fields , Hamid Drake , Fredy Studer , Mikolaj Trzaska , Luc Houtkamp and in a trio with Axel Dörner and Fred Lonberg-Holm . Since 1997 he has been a member of Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet , with whom he also appears in smaller groups such as Joe McPhee . With Gebhard Ullmann , Steve Swell and Fred Lonberg-Holm he pictures Ullmann / Swell's Chicago plan . He can also be heard on Peter A. Schmid's album Chicago Conversations (2015).
Zerang composed for ballet, theater groups, performance artists , ensembles of new music as well as film and video artists.
Outside of jazz and improvisation music (more in the field of folk music ) he worked a. a. with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Daniel Higgs .
He was also a visiting professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Dance Center of Columbia College and at Northwestern University . He also organized concerts in different series in Chicago.
Prizes and awards
Zerang received a Joseph Jefferson Award for Original Music Composition in Theater in 1996, 1998 and 2000 . In 2002 he received an Artist Fellowship from the Illinois Arts Council.
