Raphael Rogiński (* 1977 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a Polish electric guitarist .

Live and act

Raphael Rogiński was born into a family of Jewish emigrants from Poland and grew up in Frankfurt. His parents had left Poland as a result of the reprisals against Jews after 1968. He returned to Poland with his mother in the early 1980s. He was trained in classical music and jazz, and also studied music theory and ethnomusicology .

He plays blues , folk , free jazz , swing and klezmer . In 2012 he performed in a duo with the lute player Jozef van Wissem at the Berlin Biennale .

A central element in Rogiński's music is the engagement with traditional music and folklore, especially with Jewish music. In the Trio Shofar (with Mikołaj Trzaska and Macio Moretti ), which has existed since 2006, he interprets traditional Jewish songs in a free jazz context . With future he will pursue the Jewish music tradition in quieter arrangements, while with Alte Zachen he combines it with elements of surf rock . On Yemen: Music of the Yemenite Jews , he interpreted to Perry Robinson , Waclaw Zimpel and Michael Zerang traditional music of Yemenite Jews.

With his band Wovoka , Rogiński dedicated himself to the American gospel tradition from the repertoire of Blind Willie Johnson . With the folk singer Genowefa Lenarcik he interprets Kurpish folk songs as Żywizna . In 2016 they released their joint album Zaświeć niesiącku and other Kurpian songs . In the same year Woman Blue appeared in the band Shy Albatross , in which Rogiński works with the well-known singer Natalia Przybysz .

Rogiński also interpreted compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach ( Bach Bleach ), John Coltrane (on his solo album Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes ) and Henry Purcell ( Plays Henry Purcell ). In 2012 he recorded the album The Mono as Sisters with the Polish DJ Lenar .

In 2008 he played as a guest banjo on gospel by Lao Che .
