Paul Armin Edelmann (* 1968 in Vienna ) is an Austrian opera singer with a baritone voice .

life and career

Family and education

Paul Armin Edelmann is the younger son of the Austrian opera singer Otto Edelmann ; his older brother Peter Edelmann is also an opera singer (baritone). Paul Armin Edelmann was a member of the Vienna Boys' Choir from 1978 to 1982 . He received his vocal training from 1987 to 1992 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna from his father.

Opera

After completing his training, he was initially a permanent member of the ensemble at the Koblenz Theater from 1992 to 1997 . There he worked on almost thirty specialist roles in the field of opera and operetta . In 1996 he took part in the Mörbisch Seefestspiele together with his brother Peter Edelmann . He sang Doctor Falke in the operetta Die Fledermaus ; his brother sang the role of Eisenstein. In 1998 he returned to Vienna and has been working as a freelance singer ever since. There he appeared at the Vienna State Opera (as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte 1998-2000) and at the Vienna Volksoper (Papageno, Doktor Falke in Die Fledermaus ).

In 1998 he took part in the world premiere of the opera Luci mie traditrici / Die tödliche Blume by Salvatore Sciarrino at the Schwetzingen Festival . In 2002 he sang the role of Octave in the operetta Eva by Franz Lehár at the Klagenfurt City Theater . In February / March 2009 he sang the title role of the opera Don Giovanni at the Opera House in Dublin with Opera Ireland .

He gave guest appearances at the Teatro Real in Madrid (as Papageno), at the Komische Oper in Berlin (as Fürst Ottokar in Der Freischütz ) and at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (1999, as Doktor Malatesta in Don Pasquale ). He has also made guest appearances at the Frankfurt Opera (as Guglielmo), at the St. Gallen City Theater (December 2008, debut as Danilo in The Merry Widow ), at the Bern City Theater and at the Stuttgart State Opera (2010/11 season as Eisenstein). In the 2011/12 season he sang the role of Eisenstein there again. In 2012 he was seen at the Opéra National du Rhin as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte ; In 2013 and 2014 he also sang this role at the Bregenz Festival . In January 2017 he made a guest appearance in Beijing at the National Center for the Performing Arts as Count Danilo Danilowitsch in The Merry Widow .

He has made a name for himself internationally with the most important Mozart roles (Don Giovanni, Guglielmo) in his field and in the German baritone field and as an operetta performer .

Concert and recitals

Since 2010 he has intensified his concert activities with guest performances and recitals at the following stages: Wiener Konzerthaus , Wiener Musikverein , Philharmonie Berlin , Berwaldhalle Stockholm , Bronfman Auditorium Tel Aviv, Philharmonie Warsaw, Festspielhaus Salzburg, Brucknerhaus Linz , Salzburg Mozarteum , Prinzregententheater Munich , Laeiszhalle Hamburg , Philharmonie Cologne , Philharmonie am Gasteig Munich, Konzerthaus Dortmund , Philharmonie Luxembourg , Palau de la Música Valencia, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic , Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, Kurhaus Wiesbaden , Tonhalle Zurich , Culture and Congress Center Lucerne , Victoria Hall Geneva, Rudolfinum Prague, Rheingau Music Festival and Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow.

Sometimes he also performed together with his brother at song recitals. In addition to the Lied and opera repertoire, Edelmann also sings operettas and interprets Viennese songs there.

Television appearances

Edelmann also made several television appearances. In 1998 he sang the baritone part in Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation at a performance in the Vatican in the presence of John Paul II ; In 2006 he performed again with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Vatican (WA Mozart: Coronation Mass ). In 2007, 2008 and 2011 he sang at the Christmas in Vienna event at the Vienna Konzerthaus alongside Elīna Garanča , José Cura and Juan Diego Flórez .
