history

The Thurgauer Zeitung looks back on more than 200 years of history. First published on August 22, 1798 as a weekly paper for the canton of Thurgau , the newspaper was renamed the Frauenfelder Zeitung in 1806 . Since 1809 the title has been called Thurgauer Zeitung . In 1858 the bookseller Jacques Huber bought the printing business in Frauenfeld, including the newspaper. The Huber family then shaped the Thurgauer Zeitung for five generations and gave it a liberal-conservative orientation.

With the merging of the title with the Thurgauer Volksfreund , the Thurgauer Tagblatt , the Thurgauer Volkszeitung , the Bischofszeller Zeitung and the Bischofszeller Nachrichten , the Neue Thurgauer Zeitung was created in 2001 . In 2005 the Zurich publishing house Tamedia took over the share capital of Huber & Co. AG and with it the Thurgauer Zeitung . Tamedia sold the two Huber print shops, the bookstore and the book publisher until 2010, discontinued a number of local newspapers and finally sold the Huber & Co. building on the promenade in Frauenfeld to a group of investors led by SVP National Councilor Peter in 2010 Spuhler .

Between April 2007 and December 2010, the Thurgauer Zeitung appeared with a coat created by the Winterthurer Landbote and also had the subtitle “Die Nordostschweiz”. Since 2011 the newspaper has consisted of six groups, the first three of which are printed in the entire Tagblatt group and produced in St. Gallen.

After Tamedia took over a 60% stake in Zürichsee-Zeitung in 2010, Tamedia and the NZZ media group exchanged stakes : Tamedia left the Thurgauer Zeitung to NZZ and in return took over its shares in Zürcher Oberländer , Zürcher Unterländer and Zürichsee-Zeitung . The NZZ built in the early 2011 episode Thurgauer Zeitung in the composite of the St. Galler Tagblatt .

Since July 2019, the Saturday editions have been published as Switzerland on the weekend with an additional 3rd section on the beautiful sides of life with more reports and backgrounds as well as opinions and comments from editors and guest authors.

In 2018, the NZZ media group brought the St. Galler Tagblatt together with the Luzerner Zeitung to the CH Media joint venture founded with AZ Medien , which is owned equally by both groups. In preparation for this, the holding companies of the two newspapers, Tagblatt Medien Holding AG and LZ Medien Holding AG, were merged to form CH Regionalmedien AG. The joint venture includes the regional newspapers and the radio and TV stations of both companies. Operations started on October 1, 2018.

Editors-in-chief

Well-known former editors-in-chief of the Thurgauer Zeitung were Edwin Altwegg (1932–1960), Oskar Reck (1960–1970) and Peter Forster (1981–2000). David Angst has headed the editorial team since early 2011. Pascal Hollenstein is the journalistic director of the NZZ regional media and therefore responsible for the national parts.
