history

The origin of the Rheintalische Volkszeitung goes back to the year 1855. At that time, the Allgemeine Anzeiger for the districts of the Lower and Upper Rhine Valley , Werdenberg and Sargans , a small apolitical advertisement sheet founded by the book printer Rudolf Unteregger, appeared in Altstätten from July 7, 1855 (according to sample numbers from June 23, 1855) . In 1864 the name was shortened to Rheintalischer Allgemeine Anzeiger , a designation that was used as a subtitle until March 20, 1986 after the renaming to the current name Rheintalische Volkszeitung and the simultaneous transition to the larger format on April 16, 1904.

In 1872 a group of four members of the Catholic Conservative Party Altstätten - Cantonal Councilor Johann Baptist Rist-Bucher, District Mayor Johannes Segmüller, Mayor and Cantonal Councilor Johannes Schneider and music teacher Jakob Thür - acquired the Unteregger printing house. The group formed a consortium of 35 men who took over the ownership and publishing rights of the Rheintalischer Allgemeine Anzeiger . Out of consideration for the predominant Catholic newspaper in the canton at the time, St. Gallen's Truth Friend (later renamed Die Ostschweiz ), the initiators waited until January 1, 1893 to implement their plan for a Catholic newspaper for the region.

From 1884 the newspaper appeared twice a week, from 1900 three times, from 1910 four times, from 1959 five times and from November 1, 1976 six times.

Edition of the Rheintalische Volkszeitung from 1905

The Rheintalische Volkszeitung struggled early 20th century, particularly for the introduction of proportional representation at cantonal and national level, which was finally adopted after several rejections by voters.

In 1947, the cooperative of the book printing company of the Rheintalische Volkszeitung, which had existed since 1925, was converted into the book and offset printing company “Rheintalische Volkszeitung” AG. In 1997 the company was renamed RVA Druck und Medien AG.

On March 21, 1986 the orange color was introduced on the front, at the same time the subtitle “Rheintalischer Allgemeine Anzeiger” was dropped. On February 1, 1990, the newspaper was redesigned with the transition from Fraktur to today's newspaper head.

After the Rheintalische Volkszeitung once again got into a threatening economic situation, it decided in 2011 to actually merge with the former free-spirited opponent Der Rheintaler . To this end, the two publishers, RDV Rheintaler Druckerei und Verlag AG and RVA Druck und Medien AG, founded a joint publishing company for the two newspapers in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley , Rheintal Verlag AG, in which RDV AG held a majority of 82% . The local text and advertising sections have since been identical in both newspapers. For the time being , the Rheintalische Volkszeitung continued to obtain the supraregional pages from the Bündner Tagblatt (before that, until it was received in 1998 from Eastern Switzerland ), the Rheintaler from the St. Galler Tagblatt .

The contract with the publisher of the Bündner Tagblatt , Südostschweiz Medien AG (now Somedia AG ), was not renewed after it expired at the end of 2013. The national parts as since 2014 when Rheintaler also from the St. Galler Tagblatt adopted the Rheintalische Volkszeitung only single shell sides takes, the Rhine Valley , however, the complete first two league . RVA Druck und Medien AG was merged with RDV Rheintaler Druckerei und Verlag AG and Rheintal Verlag AG to form Rheintal Medien AG and dissolved. Rheintal Medien AG was renamed Galledia Group AG at the beginning of 2019.
