The Sargans district was an administrative unit of the Canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland from 1803 to the end of 2002 . Since 2003 it has formed the constituency of Sarganserland .
1803-1831
Since the founding of the canton of St. Gallen in 1803, the Sargans district consisted of the communities Sennwald , Gams , Grabs , Buchs , Sevelen , Azmoos , Vilters , Ragaz , Pfäfers , Sargans , Mels , Flums , Wallenstadt and Quarten .
In 1831 the previous Sargans district was divided into the "new" Sargans district and Werdenberg district.
1831-1902
The Federal Statistical Office ran the district under FSO no. 1709.

Changes in the community
- 1816: Ragaz → Ragaz and Vilters split up
