history

The Wil region has long been characterized by a particularly large variety of press. The oldest newspaper printed in Wil was the St. Gallische Volkszeitung by Johann Joseph Müller. It was published from April 23 to December 24, 1844. In 1845 the conservative Truth Friend was founded. In 1846 the free-spirited pilgrim on the Thur appeared twice a week , in which the later Landammann Carl Georg Jakob Sailer was editorially active. The Volksfreund von Wil (1851), the Wyler Anzeiger (around 1856) and the Volksfreund (1887/88) all appeared only briefly. In 1872 the printer Johann Meyerhans founded the new Wyler Anzeiger , which appeared once a week until 1875 and twice a week from 1875 onwards. In 1896 J. Müller founded the Wyler Bote . In 1905, the messenger took over the also conservative Anzeiger . In 1962 the messenger was renamed the Neues Wiler Tagblatt , which was taken over by the publisher Paul Ruckstuhl. In 1998 he discontinued the paper.

In 1856, Andreas Zehnder took over the printing and publishing of the Wyler Gazette and renamed it Wiler Zeitung . In 1962 the Zehnder printing company sold the newspaper to the Flawil printing company (today, after the merger with Rheintal Druck und Verlag AG, Galledia AG), which published the FDP- affiliated papers Der Volksfreund and Gossauer Zeitung . In 1976 the Zehnder family founded the Wiler Nachrichten, a new weekly paper.

On September 25, 1997, it became known that the Wiler Zeitung and the Volksfreund are joining the St. Galler Tagblatt of the St. Gallen media house Zollikofer and will take over its cover . In the course of this cooperation, the two newspapers were merged in 1998 under the new name Die Wiler Zeitung - Der Volksfreund . While the regional section continues to be independent, the cover section has since been obtained from the St. Galler Tagblatt . In return, the Wiler regional edition of the Tagblatt was discontinued, the subscribers went to the Flawil printing company, the Gossauer Zeitung went to the St. Galler Tagblatt . The Wiler Zeitung - Der Volksfreund appeared in two local editions, one for Flawil , Uzwil and Wil and one for Hinterthurgau . Since 2002 the newspaper has been called Wiler Zeitung , the title Volksfreund was only used in the subtitle.

In 2014, St. Galler Tagblatt AG, part of the NZZ media group , took over the rights to the Wiler Zeitung ; after Tamedia had already tried unsuccessfully. The takeover took the form of an exchange of shares, which also included the transfer of the local newspaper Alttoggenburger from the Flawil printing company to the St. Galler Tagblatt . The subtitle Der Volksfreund was abandoned. Since October 1, 2018, the Wiler Zeitung has been published by CH Media , a joint venture between the NZZ media group and AZ Medien .
