The Oberrheintal District was until 2003 an administrative unit of the Canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland . It was created in 1831 by dividing the Rhine Valley district into the Upper Rhine Valley and the Lower Rhine Valley district . Together with the Lower Rhine Valley district, it formed the part of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley between Rheineck and Rüthi .

The Upper Rhine Valley district has been part of the Rhine Valley constituency since 2003 . The Upper Rhine Valley forms a sub-region of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley.
