history

The Zürichsee-Zeitung was founded in 1844 as a liberal weekly newspaper from Lake Zürich by the reading society Stäfa, with the express aim of gradually suppressing the church call. The first edition appeared on January 4, 1845. Already after the fourth, the municipality of Stäfa decided to use the weekly newspaper instead of the Wädenswiler Allgemeine Anzeiger vom Zürichsee as the official publication organ (later it became the official publication organ for the Miles district and the Zollikon municipality). As a result, the weekly newspaper changed its name several times: 1846 weekly for the districts of Meilen and Horgen , 1849 weekly for Meilen and Hinwil , from 1854 weekly for the district of Meilen . In 1857 Rudolf Gull took over the management of the newspaper, in 1881 his son Emil. From 1858 the newspaper appeared twice a week (but did not change the name to Anzeiger des Bezirk Meilen until 1869 ), and from 1894 three times a week. In 1887, the Reading Society sold the newspaper to the Gull family. In 1902 the latter founded the book printing company Stäfa AG, which held the publishing house and the printing company for the viewer for the Miles district . Emil Gull renamed it the Zürichsee-Zeitung in 1907 and expanded it into a daily newspaper in 1914.

Distribution area of the Zürichsee-Zeitung

In 1914, Theodor Gut senior joined the editorial team of the Zürichsee-Zeitung as a 24-year-old student and became editor-in-chief in 1920. Emil Gull managed the company until 1925, after which his brother Albert took his place. Theodor Gut was able to take over the publishing house in 1933 and gave the Zürichsee-Zeitung a pointedly liberal orientation. After his death in 1953, the company was taken over by his sons, Ulrich Gut as delegate and Theodor Gut junior as president and editor-in-chief. This initiated the change from the Zürichsee-Zeitung to a non-party forum newspaper.

In 1983 the book printing company Stäfa AG (renamed Zürichsee Medien AG in 1990) together with others founded the local radio station Radio Zürisee , but was initially only able to take a 10% stake due to competition law restrictions. In 1990, together with the partners Zürcher Oberländer , Zürcher Unterländer , Linth-Zeitung , Zolliker Bote , Allgemeine Anzeiger vom Zürichsee , Grenzpost am Zürichsee and the newspaper conveyor technology company Ferag, it started the newspaper printing company DZO Oetwil am See, which produces the Zürichsee-Zeitung and printed the partners' newspapers. In 1991 the son of Theodor Gut junior, the third Theodor Gut, took over the chairmanship of the board of directors of Zürich Medien AG.

Regional and local editions

In 1969 the Wädenswiler Allgemeine Anzeiger vom Zürichsee, founded in 1841, and in 1971 the Richterswiler Grenzpost am Zürichsee, founded in 1865, became the headers of the Zürichsee-Zeitung . This made the long-sought leap across the lake; the circulation rose from 20,000 to 28,000 copies.

In 1997 the Zürichsee-Zeitung and ofa Orell Füssli Werbe AG (since 1998 Publigroupe ) founded Zürichsee Presse AG (ZSZ 55%, ofa 45%) to publish a joint daily newspaper of five sheets: the Zürichsee-Zeitung , the two owned by ofa , previously published three times a week newspapers Sihl Valley , Langnau am Albis , and Gazette of the district of Horgen , Horgen , as well as through cooperation agreements of the Linth newspaper , Rapperswil , and the Grenzpost am Zürichsee . The Zürichsee-Zeitung provided the supraregional cover . The newspaper first appeared on October 21, 1997 in a standardized format, but with the exception of the Horgen advertisement , which was now published as the Zürichsee-Zeitung , with the previous titles. The total circulation of these sheets, known as the “Zürichsee-Zeitung”, was around 50,000 copies.

The head of the Allgemeine Anzeiger vom Zürichsee went into the Zürichsee-Zeitung . The Zürichsee-Zeitung had taken over their publishing rights, and in 1998 also took over those of the Grenzpost am Zürichsee and the Linth-Zeitung .

The conversion into daily newspapers of the regional newspapers and official publications in the Horgen and Sihl valley districts, which were previously published three times a week, led the local authorities there to fear that the circulation could drop so sharply that the population would not be affected because of the higher subscription prices more could be sufficiently achieved with the official news. However, that did not happen.

In 2000, the Zürichsee-Zeitung also took over the March Höfe Zeitung , Lachen , which had previously been published three times a week , and incorporated it into the network of Zürichsee-Zeitung. It now appeared in five regional editions: Zürichsee-Zeitung District Meilen , Zürichsee-Zeitung left bank , Zürichsee-Zeitung Sihltal-Thalwil , Zürichsee-Zeitung Linth-Zeitung and Zürichsee-Zeitung March Höfe . The total circulation rose to 50,787 copies.

In 2006 the Zürichsee-Zeitung took over the weekly Zolliker Boten and in 2008 the Thalwiler Anzeiger, which appeared three times a week . Both were continued unchanged.

In 2009, the Zürichsee-Zeitung reduced the number of regional editions from five to three by merging: Zürichsee-Zeitung District Meilen , Zürichsee-Zeitung District Horgen (previously Zürichsee-Zeitung left bank and Zürichsee-Zeitung Sihltal-Thalwil ) and Zürichsee-Zeitung Obersee (previously Zürichsee-Zeitung Linth-Zeitung and Zürichsee-Zeitung March Höfe ). The Sihltaler was taken out of the network and has been published twice a week since then.

In 2018, the Zürichsee-Zeitung and Südostschweiz merged their regional editions of the Zürichsee-Zeitung Obersee and Südostschweiz Gaster and See to form the Linth-Zeitung based in Rapperswil-Jona and Uznach . The editor-in-chief is Urs Zweifel. The first issue appeared on October 1, 2018.

Participation of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung

In 2005 Publicitas sold its stake in Zürichsee Presse AG: 5% to Zürichsee Medien AG, 20% and in 2007 a further 20% to FPH Freie Presse Holding of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , and also in 2005 a 40% stake in Zürcher Unterländer , Dielsdorf , to the FPH. FPH also took over 38% of the Zürcher Oberländer , Wetzikon, from an asset manager . In 2006 the three regional newspapers founded Zürich Land Medien AG, which produced the cover pages for the three papers under the name Zürcher Landzeitung .

Takeover by Tamedia

Because the Gut family could not find a successor of their own to manage the newspaper, they put their 60% stake in Zürichsee Presse AG and the minority stakes in Zürichsee Druckerei AG and Radio Zürisee up for sale in 2010. Tamedia took over the Zürichsee-Zeitung , while the shares in Zürichsee Druckerei AG and Radio Zürisee initially remained in the possession of the Gut family. A right of first refusal of FPH in Zürichsee Presse AG, in which it already held 40%, was invalid in the opinion of Zürichsee Medien AG because a package and not just Zürichsee Presse AG was up for sale. This initiated an exchange of stakes between Tamedia and FPH, in the course of which Tamedia gave FPH its 100% stake in Thurgauer Zeitung , which took over 40% of FPH and thus became the sole owner of Zürichsee-Zeitung and it became part of the Zurich regional newspapers incorporated.

From 2011, the Winterthurer Landbote , in which Tamedia had held a minority stake since 2005, took over the production of the cover pages for the Zurich regional newspapers instead of the Zürichsee-Zeitung . Tamedia canceled the contract at the end of 2013, after which it was able to take over the Landbote entirely at the end of August 2013 . The production of the international and national cover pages was then transferred to the Berner Zeitung from 2014 , the cover for the city and canton of Zurich has since been produced by the cantonal editorial office of the Zürcher regional newspapers in Winterthur.

Since the beginning of 2018, only one German and one French-speaking Tamedia editorial team has been creating the international / national cover (domestic, international, business and sports) for the 12 paid daily and 2 Sunday newspapers of Tamedia. The previous editor-in-chief of Tages-Anzeiger / SonntagsZeitung Arthur Rutishauser is the head of the German-speaking main editorial team . He also remains editor-in-chief of the SonntagsZeitung . Benjamin Geiger remains editor-in-chief of the Zürcher regional newspapers Zürichsee-Zeitung , Landbote and Zürcher Unterländer .
