The Chinese National Center for the Performing Arts ( Chinese 國家 大 劇院 / 国家 大 剧院 , Pinyin Guójiā dà jùyuàn ; English National Center for the Performing Arts ), also known as the Chinese National Theater or Chinese National Opera , is a large theater and opera building in the Chinese Capital Beijing .
It is located downtown, west of Tian'anmen Square and the Great Hall of the People in Beijing's Xicheng District .
architecture
The building, designed by French architect Paul Andreu , opened in 2007. Its egg-shaped, spectacular exterior and interior - elliptical, made of glass and titanium , reminiscent of the traditional yin-and-yang motif, surrounded by an artificial lake - is one of the city's modern architectural sights.
It is a venue for national and international theater, opera, music and dance performances.
