Great Hall of the People

The Great Hall of the People ( Chinese  人民大會堂  /  人民大会堂 , Pinyin Rénmín Dàhuìtáng  - "People's Congress Hall ") is one of the most emblematic buildings in Beijing ( PR China ). The building in neoclassical style based on a design by Zhang Bo is located on the west side of Tian'anmen Square and is used by Chinese leaders as a reception location for state guests and a venue for national celebrations.

The Great Hall of the People was built from October 1958 to August 1959 during the great leap forward in just ten months as one of the " Ten Great Buildings " ("十大 建筑"; Pinyin: Shí Dà Jiànzhù ) in the style of " socialist classicism " Erected on the tenth day of the founding of the People's Republic. Its roof is covered with yellow and green glazed tiles. The main entrance bears the national coat of arms and faces the square. At the entrance there are twelve light gray marble columns, each 25 meters high.

The 170,000 square meter building contains over 300 halls and offices. Each hall is named after an administrative unit and furnished according to the respective local style. The largest room is the congress hall to the west, which offers more than 10,000 seats on 76 by 60 meters. In addition to the congresses of the Communist Party of China , the annual meeting of the National People's Congress takes place there. The next largest room is the banquet hall with over 5000 seats, which is located in the north of the Great Hall. The offices of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress are to the south of the structure.

Every March in the Great Hall of the People, the joint session of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People and the National People's Congress is held to discuss principles of future politics.

The Great Hall of the People has been featured on banknotes of the People's Republic of China since the third renminbi series . It was depicted on the back of the then highest banknote, the 10-yuan note. In the current fifth series, it appears in red on the back of the currently highest note, the 100 yuan note.

The first commercial pop concert in the Great Hall of the People took place on August 11, 2006. It was hosted by Richie Jen and Huang Pin-Yuan, two Taiwanese artists.

Planning

Plans call for a renovation of the Great Hall of the People in order to reduce energy consumption by 20%. The work is expected to be completed in three to five years and is part of a large-scale renovation plan in China's capital.
