Zhang Bo (architect)

Zhāng Bó (张 镈, born April 12, 1911 in Guǎngzhōu , died July 1, 1999 in Běijīng ) was a Chinese architect .

biography

Zhāng Bó's ancestors came from Wúdì in the Shāndōng Province .

In 1930, Zhāng began studying architecture at the University of Northeast China . Among his teachers were Liáng Sīchéng and Lín Huīyīn . The following year - after the Mukden incident - he moved to the National Central University ( 國立 中央 大學 ). After graduating in 1934, he first worked for Kwan, Chu and Yang Architects ( 基泰 工程 司 ), where he was particularly influenced by Yáng Tíngbǎo ( 楊廷 寶 ). In 1941 he led the investigation of numerous historical buildings in Běijīng .

In 1949 Zhāng worked for the fire department and moved to Hong Kong with the Kwan, Chu and Yang company .

In early 1951, Zhāng resigned, returned to the newly founded People's Republic of China and became chief architect of an important state architecture firm in Běijīng. For the next ten years he directed the design of numerous important buildings in Běijīng.

At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, Zhan was accused of espionage and persecuted.

In 1972 he was able to work again and directed the design of the east wing of the Hotel Běijīng ( 北京 飯店 ). In 1990 he designed the reconstruction of a historical pagoda on behalf of the Wúdì district government.

Zhāng died of cancer in Běijīng. His ashes were buried in his clan's grave in the village of Chēwáng ( 车 王 镇 ).
