Ten great buildings
The Ten Great Buildings (Chinese: 十大 建筑; Pinyin: Shí Dà Jiànzhù) are ten public buildings in Beijing that were completed in 1959 on the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China .
history
The ten monumental buildings were part of an urbanization initiative during the great leap forward .
In September 1958, Beijing Deputy Mayor Wan Li summoned 34 architectural firms from Beijing and another 30 experts from other parts of China to collect designs for these ten structures. According to the specifications of Prime Minister Zhou Enlai , western architectural styles could also be used.
The architects essentially used three architectural styles:
- Modernism / international style ,
- Socialist Realism / Stalinist Architecture ,
- Historicism based on traditional Chinese architecture .
With these Ten Great Buildings, Beijing was redesigned and an image of Mao Zedong's " New China " was created.
Lists of Ten Large Buildings from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s were later compiled, with the list presented here always being seen as the original.
