Laurence Cummings

Laurence Cummings (born 1968 in Birmingham ) is a British harpsichordist , conductor and university professor .

He has directed the London Handel Festival since 1999 and the Göttingen International Handel Festival since 2012 .

life and work

Laurence Cummings attended Solihull School and Christ Church College , Oxford, studied at the Royal College of Music, and received an MA from the University of Oxford . Jill Severs was one of his teachers. He is a founding member of the London Handel Players and has devoted his career mainly to the work of George Frideric Handel .

From 1997 to 2012, Cummings headed the music department of the Royal Academy of Music . He is Music Director of the London Handel Orchestra and, since 1999, of the London Handel Festival . He is also president of the Tilford Bach Society , music director of the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música in Porto and a trustee of the Handel House Museum . In September 2011 he also took over the management of the International Handel Festival in Göttingen .

He played the harpsichord with a number of well-known original sound ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants , The Sixteen Choir , Gabrieli Consort, and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment . He has also conducted at the English National Opera , in Glyndebourne and Garsington , at the English Touring Opera and at the opera houses of Lyon and Zurich .

Cummings published numerous audio documents, both as an instrumentalist and as a conductor . His recordings as a conductor included Handel's recently discovered Gloria with soloist Emma Kirkby and the Royal Academy of Music Baroque Orchestra and Handel Arias with Angelika Kirchschlager and the Basel Chamber Orchestra (for Sony BMG). He also presented a series of recordings dedicated to keyboard works by Louis and François Couperin and Handel.
