Beginning of a prelude non mesuré by Louis Couperin

Louis Couperin (* around 1626 in Chaumes-en-Brie , † August 29, 1661 in Paris ) was a French composer , organist and violinist.

Louis Couperin, uncle of François Couperin , was one of the most famous members of the Couperin family and one of the best composers for keyboard instruments of the 17th century. Little is known about the first 23 years of his life. In 1650 Jacques Champion de Chambonnières , famous harpsichordist, violinist and composer, took him under his wing in Paris. Three years later, Louis was the first of his dynasty to take up the post of organist at St-Gervais, which he held until his death. He also played as an organist, harpsichord player and violist in the chamber music ensemble of Ludwig XIV .

Most notable among his harpsichord compositions are his Préludes non mesurés (“Préludes without bar lines”), which betray the influence of Johann Jakob Froberger , and his Chaconnes .

The asteroid (6798) Couperin was named after him.
