Tilford Bach Society

The Tilford Bach Society (TBS) has organized the Tilford Bach Festival every June since 1952 , dedicated to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach .

history

Tilford is in County Surrey , about sixty kilometers southwest of London. At the beginning of the 1950s, the organist and composer Denys Darlow (1921-2015), who initiated the founding of the TBS, was the musical director of the All Saints Church there . The first Bach Festival was held in the year the company was founded.

For the first two decades, the festival was based on the collective effort of the community and the surrounding area. In addition to teachers and professional musicians, many recreational musicians also took part. From the 1970s onwards, the original sound movement began to gain acceptance in Tilford and the participation of amateurs was finally dispensed with. Denys Darlow, who subsequently also founded the London Handel Society and the associated festival, retired in 2002 after 50 years with the Tilford Bach Society and handed the artistic direction over to Laurence Cummings , a well-known harpsichordist and conductor. Today the festival is headed by violinist Adrian Butterfield.

Well-known specialists in baroque music have already played, sung and conducted in Tilford - including the London Handel Players , soprano Emma Kirkby , countertenor Robin Blaze and bass Peter Harvey . Bach's Christmas Oratorio was given to mark the 150th anniversary of Tilford Church in November 2017 .

The Tilford Bach Society also organizes regular concerts in nearby Farnham .
