Lyon Opera House

The first opera house in Lyon was built by the architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot and inaugurated in 1756. Due to its poor condition, however, it was demolished in 1826 to make way for the Théâtre Chenavard , a new neoclassical building designed by the architects Antoine-Marie Chenavard and Jean-Marie Pollet. In 1989 the opera was completely rebuilt under the direction of Jean Nouvel . The original facade has remained from the original building; the interior and a very distinctive steel and glass roof structure have been completely redesigned. Since this redesign, the opera house has also been referred to as Opéra Nouvel , based on the name of the architect .

In the interior there is the large hall with 1100 seats as well as a small amphitheater with space for 200 spectators. In order to isolate disturbing vibrations and other environmental influences from the auditorium in the best possible way, the great hall inside the opera house was suspended from 46 meter high concrete pillars with the help of six huge steel girders, each weighing 23 tons.
