Serge Dorny

Serge Dorny (born February 4, 1962 in Wevelgem ) is a Belgian opera director.

Life

Serge Dorny studied architecture, art history, archeology, composition and music analysis in Ghent . He began his theater work in 1983 as a dramaturge at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie in Gerard Mortier's team . In 1987 he became artistic director of the Flanders Festival . In 1996 he moved to the London Philharmonic Orchestra as General Director and Artistic Director and was with the orchestra in Glyndebourne every year .

Since 2003 he has directed the Opéra National de Lyon . Dorny was not only able to increase the audience there, but he also brought world premieres and commissioned compositions to the stage: John Adams ' The Death of Klinghoffer , Pascal Dusapin's The fall of the last night , Kaija Saariahos Emilie , Péter Eötvös ' Lady Sarashina and Michel van the carrion after life .

From October 2013 he had a contract at the Semperoper in Dresden to prepare his directorship, which should begin in September 2014. The contract was terminated by Sabine von Schorlemer , Saxon Art Minister , on February 21, 2014 with immediate effect. The artist then sued the labor court in Dresden against the Free State of Saxony. In December 2015, the Dresden Regional Court ruled that the dismissal was wrong; Dorny is therefore entitled to compensation of 1.5 million euros.

Dorny returned to the Lyon Opera. From the 2021/22 season onwards, Dorny will take over the management of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as the successor to Nikolaus Bachler .

Dorny is a member of various prizes at international music competitions. Since 2008 he has been teaching at the University of Zurich in the Arts Administration course.

Dorny received various awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Montreal in 2008 , Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2012 and Knight of the Belgian Order of the Crown in 2013 .
