life and career

Laurent Pelly founded his first theater company, Le Pelican, in 1980 at the age of 18. Since 1989 he has been running Le Pelican in cooperation with Agathe Mélinand, who has been regularly involved in Pelly's productions as a dramaturge since then and has edited libretti for his opera productions and wrote new dialogues.

From 1997 to 2007 Pelly was a director at the Center dramatique national des Alpes in Grenoble . In 2007 he took over the management of the Théatre National de Toulouse (TNT) with Agathe Mélinand. Laurent Pelly ended his work as co-director at TNT at the end of 2017, his successor being Galin Stoev.

1997 marked the beginning of his international career. Together with Mélinand he staged a scenic version of the Homeric Hymns at the Avignon Festival . In the same year he made his debut in Lyon and Geneva with Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in der Unterwelt , his first Offenbach production, which was to be followed by others in the following years: The beautiful Helena (Paris 2000), La Périchole (2002), Hoffmann's stories (Lausanne 2003, San Francisco 2013, Barcelona 2013, Japan tour 2014, New York 2017/18, Berlin 2019, The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (Paris 2004, Geneva 2012), three one-act plays (Lyon 2005), Parisian life (Lyon 2007) , Le roi Carotte (Lyon 2015). In 1998 he directed Shakespeare's royal drama Vie et mort du roi Jean in Grenoble , which was shown in Avignon that same year.

Some of Pelly's productions have been part of the repertoire for years or have been added to the repertoire of international opera houses. Hoffmann's stories have been played repeatedly since the premiere in 2003 in Lyon and Lausanne, for example in New York in 2017/18, and the opera is on the Berlin program in 2019. The Daughter of the Regiment has been shown since its premiere in 2007 in London, both in New York, Vienna, Barcelona, San Francisco, Toulouse and Lyon. During his 40-year career as a director, he has staged over 100 plays, 40 of them operas and 60 plays.

Quote

“All the problems - morals, politics, aesthetics - posed by this stammering age are hinted at in Shakespeare's theater.
Because they have the deepest effects, the most burning issues: the problem of responsibility and freedom, doubt and the inability to communicate with one another, intoxication and abuse of power, the goal and purpose of violence like existence itself ...
The eyes are still open to a time that heaven has already given up, the poet from Stratford examines this dark world with the luminosity of a laser - as if floating between the recognizable and the inaccessible - he probes the roots of our consciousness.
As a result, Hamlet, Brutus, Richard, Lear, or Lady Macbeth are not literary abstractions. Their actions concern us, their torments are ours, their violence outlives us. "
