Les Arts Florissants

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Les Arts Florissants is a music ensemble founded in 1979 by the conductor William Christie in Caen , named after an opera by the French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier , and dedicated to baroque music in historical performance practice. The ensemble's British cellist, Jonathan Cohen , is increasingly appearing as a conductor, while William Christie is the artistic director.

composition

The ensemble consists of an instrumental ensemble and a small vocal ensemble. All musicians also regularly take on solo tasks.

Performance practice and instruments

The troupe is one of the leading ensembles in historical performance practice, whose aim is a sound and style in articulation and agogic that comes as close as possible to the time of the work being performed . The instruments used are therefore either originals from the respective period or faithful replicas. The strings use gut strings (see baroque violin ).

cooperation

Both the instrumental and the vocal ensemble work together with other ensembles. William Christie uses the vocal ensemble e.g. B. for productions with orchestras of opera houses, if there are special requirements for the choir.
