Stefan Vladar (born October 2, 1965 in Vienna ) is an Austrian pianist and conductor.

Life

Stefan Vladar studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Hans Petermandl . In 1985, at the age of nineteen and the youngest participant, he won the 7th International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna.

This was followed by an international career and cooperation with well-known conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Christoph von Dohnanyi , Vladimir Fedosejev , Christopher Hogwood , Louis Langrée , Neville Marriner , Yehudi Menuhin , Seiji Ozawa , Simon Rattle and Christian Thielemann and orchestras such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam , the Academy of St Martin in the Fields , the Bavarian State Orchestra , the Chamber Orchestra of Europe , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo , the Vienna Philharmonic , the Vienna Symphony and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich .

Vladar is also a chamber musician, accompanist and artistic director of several music festivals in Austria. He was a guest at the Salzburg Festival, the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Bremen Music Festival , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Ruhr Piano Festival, the Schwetzingen SWR Festival and the festivals in Aix-en-Provence , Bergen and other festivals.

For several years, Vladar has also made a name for himself as a conductor. He has worked with orchestras such as the Vienna Symphony, the Camerata Salzburg, the Hague Residence Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow, the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Bamberg Symphony.

In 2010 he was artist in residence at the Bodenseefestival and in 2012/13 with the Duisburg Philharmonic . For almost 20 years he has been the artistic director of the “Neuberger Kulturtage”.

Since autumn 2015, Vladar has been working with the Austrian label Capriccio . He first published a CD with piano works by Ravel. This was followed in 2016 by the complete recording of all Beethoven piano concertos as soloist and conductor as well as the triple and violin concert with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra . He also recorded Schubert's three great song cycles with Bo Skovhus . Numerous previous CD recordings have been released by Harmonia Mundi and Sony Classical .

Stefan Vladar is professor for piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He has been General Music Director at Theater Lübeck since the 2019/2020 season .
