Il complesso barocco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Il complesso barocco is a European baroque ensemble , founded in 1977 in Amsterdam by Alan Curtis .

History and focus

The ensemble was one of the first to fully commit itself to historical performance practice, tried to find forgotten works in particular by Carlo Gesualdo , Antonio Vivaldi and Georg Friedrich Händel , and quickly established itself as an outstanding ensemble in the international concert scene. The important rediscoveries by Il complesso barocco , most of which have also appeared as audio documents, include:

Donna Leon has a long friendship with the ensemble and its director. In 2010 the CD Animals and Tones was released with texts by Donna Leons and drawings by Michael Sowa . In 2012 Joyce DiDonato achieved a veritable triumph together with the Complesso barocco and Alan Curtis: Her aria program Drama Queens included Cesti, Gluck and Handel as well as the rediscovered song Lasciami piangere from Reinhard Keiser's Fredegunda . In the Theater an der Wien , in Prague , Bratislava , Budapest , Amsterdam and Monte Carlo there were standing ovations for the musicians and hymn reviews.

Well-known former members of the ensemble include the Italian pianist and violinist Alessandro Bares , the Japanese lutenist Yasunori Imamura , the Brazilian violinist Luís Otávio Santos and the Finnish violinist Tuomo Suni .

Cooperation with the Theater an der Wien

In 2007 Alan Curtis and the Complesso Barocco started working together with the Theater an der Wien , especially for concert performances . It began with three rarely performed works - Vivaldi's Motezuma (2007), Gluck's Ezio (2008) and Tolomeo e Alessandro by Domenico Scarlatti (2009). Since then there has been a systematic presentation of Handel's musical and dramatic work: 2009 Agrippina , 2010 Giove in Argo and Tolomeo , 2011 Berenice, Regina d'Egitto and Giulio Cesare in Egitto , 2012 Deidamia and Ariodante , 2013 Arianna in Creta and Amadigi di Gaula , as well 2014 Admeto . A relatively constant and select ensemble of singers is available for this - including the sopranos Laura Aikin , Emőke Baráth , Véronique Gens , Karina Gauvin and Roberta Invernizzi , the mezzo Ann Hallenberg and the contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Sonia Prina , occasionally the countertenors Max Emanuel Cenčić , Iestyn Davies and Franco Fagioli , as well as the basses Gianluca Buratto , Luigi De Donato and Johannes Weisser .
