Franco Maximiliano Fagioli (born May 4, 1981 in San Miguel de Tucumán , Argentina ) is an Argentine opera singer ( countertenor ).

Life

Fagioli, who has both Argentinian and Spanish citizenship, studied piano at the Music Institute in San Miguel de Tucumán, then took up vocal studies at the Art Academy of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires . In 1997 he founded the San Martin de Porres choir for young people and, at the instigation of his teachers, started a career as a countertenor. His international career began in 2003 when he won the Bertelsmann singing competition “ New Voices ” in Gütersloh .

Since then, Franco Fagioli has appeared at the opera houses in Zurich , London , Buenos Aires , Karlsruhe , Bonn , Essen and Genoa , at the Theater an der Wien and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and is a guest at the festivals a. a. in Salzburg , Halle, Ludwigsburg and Innsbruck. His Giulio Cesare 2005 in Zurich was a success, which he repeated in Oslo and Helsinki in 2007 and at the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe in 2008. Other roles in Handel's heroes such as Ariodante , Teseo , Bertarido , as Nerone in L'incoronazione di Poppea by Monteverdi or as Arsace in Aureliano in Palmira by Rossini pushed his career forward. In 2011 he received the “Premio Franco Abbiati ” - the highest musical award in Italy - as “best singer of the year”.

As a belcanto singer, Franco Fagioli specializes in roles written for castrati in the late 18th and 19th centuries. He sang the role of Sesto ( La clemenza di Tito ) and made his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London as Idamante ( Idomeneo ) in November 2014 . At the Salzburg Whitsun Festival 2014 he sang in an aria evening dedicated to the castrato singer Giovanni Battista Velluti a . a. Works by Gioachino Rossini (from Aureliano in Palmira ) and Giacomo Meyerbeer (from Il crociato in Egitto ). He was accompanied by I barocchisti under Diego Fasolis .

In 2013 Fagioli performed in a concert at the Theater an der Wien in Handel's Solomon (ML: Matthew Halls ) and Rinaldo (ML: Riccardo Minasi ). In 2014 and 2015 he played the title role of Riccardo Primo at the International Handel Festival at the Karlsruhe State Theater .

CD productions

Franco Fagioli is one of the five countertenors of the opera, TV and CD production of Leonardo Vinci's Artaserse from 2012, which was honored with many music awards such as ECHO 2013 and 2014 or the German Record Critics' Prize. In September 2013 his debut CD was released as an exclusive artist on the French label Naïve. On it he devoted himself to technically and musically demanding arias that had been written for Caffarelli alias Gaetano Majorano, perhaps the most virtuoso Italian castrato of his time. He was accompanied by the young baroque orchestra Il Pomo d'Oro, based in Venice, under Riccardo Minasi . His solo CD, released in September 2014, is dedicated to the Italian composer and singing teacher Nicola Porpora (1686–1768). With the castrati Senesino , Caffarelli and Farinelli , Porpora had trained the greatest of their guild and some of the bel canto stars of the 18th century. As a musical partner, Franco Fagioli supported the Academia Montis Regalis under Alessandro De Marchi .

In 2014 Fagioli also took part in the following CD productions: The world premiere recording of Johann Adolph Hasse's Siroe re di Persia , Antonio Caldara's La concordia de 'pianeti and Agostino Steffani's Stabat Mater .
