Franco Abbiati

Franco Abbiati (born September 14, 1898 in Verdello , † January 22, 1981 in Bergamo ) was an Italian musicologist .

Abbiati studied composition at the Turin Music Academy and graduated with a diploma in 1929. He then studied musicology in Cesena . His work as a music critic initially began from 1928 to 1936 with Secolo Sera . Then he worked for 36 years as a music critic of the Corriere della Sera until 1973 and was the author of one of the most important books on Giuseppe Verdi , but also wrote an Italian biography on Arnold Schoenberg . He was the founder and from 1949 to 1963 editor of the monthly journal La Scala.

The Premio Franco Abbiati della Critica Musicale Italiana prize is named after him.
