Luís Otávio Santos (* 1972 in Juiz de Fora ) is a Brazilian violinist and conductor of historical performance practice .

After learning the piano and violin with his musical family, Luís Otávio Santos came to the Netherlands at the age of 17 to learn to play the baroque violin with Sigiswald Kuijken . Since 1992 he has been one of the leading members of Kuijken's baroque orchestra “La Petite Bande”, where he worked both as concertmaster and as a soloist. He worked mainly in Dutch and Belgian formations, such as the “Ricercar Consort” under Philippe Pierlot , the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe , the ensemble “Il Fondamento” under Paul Dombrecht , the Nederlandse Bachvereniging under Gustav Leonhardt and the Ensemble Il complesso barocco under Alan Curtis .

From 1997 to 2001 he taught the baroque violin at the Conservatory in Fiesole , from 1998 to 2001 he was assistant to Sigiswald Kuijken at the Brussels Conservatory. In 2002 he was visiting professor at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig.

In addition to his busy concert activities, he made numerous recordings for various classic labels, such as Brilliant Classics , for which he recorded all of Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord with Pieter-Jan Belder in 1999 . The recording of Jean-Marie Leclair's sonatas on the Ramée label was awarded the coveted “Diapason d'or”. From 1998 he was conductor of the Den Haag Baroque Orchestra for several years .

Luís Otávio Santos is the artistic director of the "Festival Internacional de Musica Colonial Brasileira e Musica Antiga de Juiz de Fora", which takes place annually in his home country. In 2007, Santos received the "Ordem do Mérito Cultural" medal from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture for his services as the cultural ambassador of his home country. The Brazilian magazine Época selected him in 2011 as one of the 100 most influential Brazilians.
