Francesco Bartolomeo Conti
Francesco Bartolomeo Conti (born January 20, 1681 in Florence , † July 20, 1732 in Vienna ) was an Italian theorist and composer of the late Baroque.
Life
As early as 1699 to 1701, Conti, who was in the service of Cardinal Francesco Maria de 'Medici , was known beyond his hometown, including in Milan and Florence. The reputation gained in this way enabled him, probably from 1701, at the time of Emperor Leopold I , to get a job as an assistant theorbist in the Vienna court music band . In 1705 he left Vienna and traveled with Giovanni Bononcini to Berlin and London, where he directed performances of his operas. In this way, Conti was able to gain experience in the opera business that later served him. Back in Vienna, Conti became the first theorbist of the court orchestra in 1708, in 1711 he was appointed vice conductor and in 1713 as the successor to Johann Joseph Fux as court composer. In 1726 he was accepted into the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna . Johann Joachim Quantz said of Conti: “An inventive and fiery, although sometimes a bit bizarre composer”. His son Ignazio Maria Conti (1699–1759) was a theorbist in the Vienna court orchestra.
Conti was married three times, all three women were singers: in 1705 he married Teresia Kugler (1682–1711), the daughter of the once famous Giulia Masotti . After her death in October 1714, he married the imperial prima donna Maria Landini , who sang in all of his operas and probably in other vocal works until her death in 1722. Conti's third wife was Maria Anna Lorenzoni, who also appeared at the Viennese court as prima donna in his operas.
Works
Conti successfully combined the new Neapolitan style of opera with the Viennese opera tradition. He stood out primarily through his 24 stage compositions. His compositions include several instrumental works and the first known sonata for solo mandolin, numerous cantatas (including his solo cantata Languet anima mea, arranged by Bach ) and the tragic-comic opera Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena .
