Karina Gauvin

Karina Gauvin (born 1966 in Repentigny , Québec ) is a Canadian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Gauvin graduated from the Montreal Conservatory and postgraduate studies with Pamela Bowden at the Royal Scottish Academy in Glasgow . Although Gauvin became known as an interpreter of baroque music , her repertoire also includes Bach , Mozart and a number of 20th century composers - including Mahler , Britten and Berio .

Gauvin has been working together in concerts for many years with the Complesso Barocco under Alan Curtis and the Theater an der Wien . In 2007 she made her debut in this house as Teutile in Vivaldi's rarely performed opera Motezuma , since 2010 she has been an essential pillar of the Handel cycle there: 2010 as Calisto in Giove in Argo and as Seleuce in Tolomeo , 2011 as Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare in Egitto , 2012 as Deidamia and as Ginevra in Ariodante , finally in 2013 - with Il pomo d'oro under Riccardo Minasi  - as Armida in Rinaldo . She sang most of these roles - with the Complesso Barocco and Alan Curtis - on other important European concert stages, such as the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Opéra royal du château de Versailles , the Barbican Center in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the La Coruña Festival .

Gauvin has also performed with a number of other original sound ensembles, such as the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra , the Venice Baroque Orchestra , the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin , the Talens Lyriques under Christophe Rousset and the Violons du Roy , with whom she toured North America . With the Gabrieli Consort under Paul McCreesh , she sang at the Beaune Festival , the Alcina , with the Accademia Bizantina under Ottavio Dantone she achieved the title role in Vivaldi's Tito Manlio sustainable personal success. In the classical field, she was invited by the symphony orchestras of Montréal , Toronto , San Francisco , Chicago , New York and Rotterdam , under the direction of such important conductors as Kent Nagano , Yannick Nézet-Séguin , Sir Roger Norrington and Michael Tilson Thomas . Her concert repertoire includes a. the soprano solos in the Magnificat , Mass in B minor and the St. John Passion by Bach , in the Mozart Requiem and in the German Requiem by Brahms .

In her recitals Gauvin is accompanied by well-known pianists, including Marc Bourdeau , Marc-André Hamelin , Angela Hewitt , Michael McMahon and Roger Vignoles .

Due to her numerous concert engagements, opera appearances have so far been relatively rare. At the Opéra de Montréal she sang Leïla in Les pêcheurs de perles in 2008 and Pamina in the Magic Flute in 2009 . In 2013 she sang the title role in Gluck's Armide at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, and in 2014 Giunone and L'Eternità in Cavalli's La Calisto at the Bavarian State Opera . In the summer of 2014 she made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Armida in a Robert Carsen production of Handel's Rinaldo .
