Paul O'Dette (born February 2, 1954 in Pittsburgh ) is an American lutenist , theorbist , guitarist and musicologist .

life and work

Paul O'Dette began playing electric guitar in a band as a teenager in Columbus , where he grew up . This eventually led to his playing guitar transcriptions of lute music. After this musical experience, O'Dette decided to learn to play the lute. He also learned to play the theorbo and the baroque guitar. He specialized in Renaissance and Baroque music. He studied early music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . He practiced medieval and renaissance music with Thomas Binkley and the studio of early music , especially guitar with Christopher Parkening and lute with Eugen Dombois .

Paul O'Dette gave concerts as an instrumentalist in America and Europe for many years. He was best known for his Renaissance lute concerts. In addition to his work as a lutenist, O'Dette was the artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival . In America as in Europe, he regularly conducted baroque operas and orchestral works.

O'Dette has recorded more than a hundred records. Several of these recordings have received the Record of the Year Award and three have received the Grammy Award . All of the CDs recorded by O'Dette with lute works by John Dowland were awarded the Diapason d'or .

O'Dette published numerous articles on the subject of historical performance practice . Since 1976 O'Dette has been head of the Early Music Department at the Eastman School of Music .
