Early Music Studio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Studio for Early Music was a German chamber ensemble based in Munich that specialized in early music , especially the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The group existed from 1960 to 1977.

Work and effect

The early music studio was founded in 1960 by the American lutenist Thomas Binkley in Munich. Binkley had studied at the University of Illinois in Urbana (BM. 1956, PhD. 1959) and at the University of Munich (1957-1958). He was the group's musical director. The other members of the four-piece ensemble were the mezzo-soprano Andrea von Ramm , who played the harp and hurdy-gurdy at the same time, the tenor Nigel Rogers , who also brought in percussion instruments, and Sterling Jones , who played old bow instruments such as the lyre, bow viola and bass. Rogers (1960–1964) was later replaced by the tenor and percussionist Williard Cobb (1964–1970), who in turn was replaced after a few years by the countertenor Richard Levitt (1970–1977). The ensemble has worked regularly with renowned instrumentalists and vocalists such as Hopkinson Smith , Paul O'Dette , Montserrat Figueras , Max van Egmond , Claude Marti and Benjamin Bagby .

The group has given concerts in numerous countries in Europe, America, Asia, North Africa and Australia. She played numerous records on the EMI and Telefunken labels . All members of the group participated in conferences and university courses, for example at Yale University , Stanford University or at universities in Washington and Buenos Aires .

The group existed until 1977, when Thomas Binkley left the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis as a lecturer and began to set up the Early Music Institute at Indiana University Bloomington . The group received high praise from music critics and won numerous prizes, including the Edison Disc Award in 1965. "The work of this ensemble, which is documented on numerous recordings, had an impact on the reconstruction of medieval music that can hardly be overestimated."
