Hopkinson Smith

Hopkinson Smith (born December 7, 1946 in New York City ) is an American lutenist , specialist in early music and music teacher. Smith worked for a long time as a lecturer at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . He has lived in Basel for many years .

life and work

Hopkinson Smith graduated from Harvard University . From 1972 he completed special studies in early music and aesthetics with the Catalan guitarist Emili Pujol , the German-Swiss lutenist Eugen M. Dombois and the English countertenor Alfred Deller .

Following his studies, Smith performed as a soloist with various ensembles in Europe and North America. In the mid-1970s he was involved in founding the Hespèrion XX group . This led to a collaboration with Jordi Savall for over 10 years .

Smith worked on more than 30 recordings in the field of early music. His recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin and baroque lute from 2000 was qualified by the magazine Gramophone as "probably the best recording of these works - regardless of the instrument performed".

Since 1976 Hopkinson Smith has taught lute, basso continuo, improvisation and interpretation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. His students included Rolf Lislevand , Miguel Yisrael , Edin Karamazov , Luciano Contini , Andreas Martin , Yasunori Imamura , Rafael Bonavita and Peter Croton .
