Life

He studied harpsichord and composition at the University of Washington , where he also began playing the lute and other baroque plucked instruments . After graduating, he specialized in England and the Netherlands and made his debut at London's Wigmore Hall in 1976. From 1980 to 2006, Stubbs lived in northern Germany. He has been teaching at the Bremen Academy of Early Music since 1981 , which was merged into the Bremen University of the Arts in 1994 , where he was a professor.

He is known as a continuo player through numerous recordings and a lively concert activity with ensembles such as Fiori musicali , Musicalische Compagney , Tragicomedia and Teatro Lirico , of which he is the founder . Other partners were the Hilliard Ensemble and Andrew Lawrence-King , Les Arts Florissants and Philippe Herreweghe . The success of his performance of Stefano Landi's opera La morte d'Orfeo in 1987 at the Early Music Festival in Bruges led him to conduct early Baroque operas around the world. In 1994 he was awarded the Edison Award .

In 2006 he moved back to Seattle. He founded the Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera for young professional singers and is an adjunct professor at the Cornish College of the Arts . Together with Paul O'Dette , he is artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival and has recorded several baroque operas with it in cooperation with Radio Bremen and the sound engineer Renate Wolter-Seevers . Several of these works were nominated for a Grammy Award for the best opera recording and in 2015 they won the Grammy for the production of the opera La descente d'Orphée aux enfers by Marc-Antoine Charpentier with the Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Ensemble & Vocal Ensemble.
