Fiori musicali (baroque orchestra)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fiori musicali ( Italian for 'musical flowers') was a baroque orchestra dedicated to historical performance practice .

history

The ensemble was founded in 1978 by Thomas Albert (* 1953). The core was formed by musicians from the Bremen area , which was expanded to include international artists. The name of the ensemble ('Musical Flowers') was a popular title of early Baroque composition collections, such as the Fiori musicali by Girolamo Frescobaldi (1635), and served as a program: The ensemble initially devoted itself to the Italian violin music of Monteverdi's time in a solo, smaller format and multiple choirs . The founding members included Thomas Albert ( baroque violin ), Niklas Trüstedt ( viola da gamba ), Stephen Stubbs ( baroque lute ) and Gerhard Kastner ( continuo ). From 1980 to 1982 Cleveland Johnson was a continuo player. This was followed by orchestral music by Muffat , Corelli and Vivaldi . The orchestra was later expanded to include wind instruments and reflected the cast of baroque princely chapels.

Fiori musicali gave concerts in many countries in Western Europe and the USA. As one of the first baroque ensembles, it was based on the mid-tone tuning and performed the Grands Motets by Henry Desmarest in the Chapelle de Versailles in the French low concert pitch. The concerts with the Groningse Bachvereniging were important milestones for the early music movement in the Netherlands: Bach's Johannes Passion (1979) and Handel's Israel in Egypt (1984).

The program also included cantatas from the North German Baroque: the complete works of Georg Böhm , Nicolaus Bruhns , Franz Tunder and Vincent Lübeck . The Last Judgment by Buxtehude was first performed again in modern times, as were other baroque operas, including Handel's Almira and Rameau's La Guirlande and Castor et Pollux, and Keiser's Masaniello furioso .

The last CD recordings were made in the late 1990s, the last concerts took place in 2001. The ensemble should not be confused with the British ensemble of the same name under the direction of Penelope Rapson.
