Life

Alessandro Piccinini grew up in a musical family. Together with his brothers Filippo and Girolamo, he received training as a lutenist from his father Leonardo Maria.

From 1582 to 1597 he worked at the court of Duke Alfonso II in Ferrara . In 1597 he got a job with the papal legate Cardinal Aldobrandini in Bologna as a lutenist, which he held until his death.

Piccinini was not only active as a musician, but also developed other designs of his instruments and claimed to have paved the way for the construction of the theorbo through his own experiments.
