Thomas Albert (* 1953 in Bremen ) is a German violinist , conductor , artistic director and professor .

Live and act

Thomas Albert started playing the violin at the age of six. He majored in violin with Josef Bayerlein, Siegfried Borries and Thomas Brandis . With Sigiswald Kuijken he specialized in the baroque violin and played with La Petite Bande . Albert was one of the founding members of the 18th century orchestra with Frans Brüggen and was a violinist with the Musicalische Compagney from 1976 to 1986 . The instrument with which he performs was built by Jakob Stainer around 1680 .

In 1978 Albert founded the ensemble Fiori musicali , which in addition to him included Niklas Trüstedt ( viola da gamba ), Stephen Stubbs ( baroque lute ) and Gerhard Kastner ( continuo ), but was later expanded to include woodwinds and brass and reached the strength of baroque court orchestras. Concerts with this ensemble have taken him through most of Western Europe, Poland, Russia and Bulgaria as well as the USA. A characteristic of Fiori musicali was the use of the mean-tone tuning for the music of the 17th century. Together with the Dutch choir Groningse Bachvereniging under Johan van der Meer , Albert led his orchestra as concertmaster in Bach's Johannes Passion (1979) and Handel's Israel in Egypt (1984).

In addition to Bach cantatas , cantatas by North German baroque masters were on the program, including the complete works of Georg Böhm , Nicolaus Bruhns , Franz Tunder and Vincent Lübeck . Albert brought Buxtehude's “The Last Judgment” to life for the first time . Baroque operas such as Handel's Almira , Albert's first stage work (1985), and Keiser'sMasaniello furioso ” were performed for the first time in modern times, and other operas for the first time in Germany: Rameau's “La Guirlande” and Castor et Pollux as well as Handel's Theodora . To this day, his focus is on North German, Italian and French baroque music.

In 1982 Albert founded the Forum Alte Musik in Bremen, from which the Akademie für Alte Musik Bremen emerged in 1986 , the first German training center of its kind for historical performance practice. In 1989 he founded the "Musikfest Bremen", which he is still director today. Albert also conducts modern chamber orchestras such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and has been working on joint projects with the Beethoven Academy since 2002.

Albert has since 1986 at the Hamburg Academy of Music held a chair in baroque violin and baroque strings practice, also since 1986 as a visiting professor at the Conservatoire National in Strasbourg and has been teaching since 1989 as a professor at the Academy of Ancient Music Bremen , in the 1994 University of the Arts Bremen opened . In 2011 he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for his services to French musical culture .
