biography

Sampson studied music at Birmingham University . During her studies she sang in the Birmingham Ex Cathedra Choir and won the Arnold Goldsborough Prize for outstanding interpretation of baroque music. Sampson began her professional career as a member of small vocal ensembles. In 2000 the soprano made her opera debut as Amore in L'incoronazione di Poppea by Monteverdi . She was also heard in the London ENO in 2002 in Purcell's The Fairy-Queen and in 2004 in Handel's Semele . In 2004, Sampson appeared in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo , Handel's Tamerlano and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the opera houses of Lille, Caen and Bordeaux . In 2006 she sang Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Adina in Gaetano Donizetti's Der Liebestrank in Montpellier .

On the concert stage, parts of great sacred vocal works are part of Sampson's repertoire. For example, she took part in the English Concert under Trevor Pinnock in Bach's St. Matthew Passion and with the London Mozart Players in Haydn's Creation . In January 2010 she appeared under Riccardo Chailly in the Leipzig Gewandhaus at a performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio . Sampson has already made further appearances in Germany with the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hanover, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and in December 2009 with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra .

Sampson is not limited to baroque music, however. Her repertoire also includes works by Brahms, Britten, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Stravinsky. In 2004, the specialist magazine for classical music, Gramophone , wrote about Carolyn Sampson that she was "now the best British early music soprano by quite some distance." (Eng. "now by far the best British early music soprano". )
