The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (FBO) is an orchestra based in Freiburg im Breisgau that specializes in historically informed performance practice and mainly plays music from the 17th, 18th centuries and the first half of the 19th century.

activity

The FBO was founded in 1987 from student initiatives at the Freiburg University of Music , not least from students of Rainer Kussmaul . It regularly plays its own concert series in the Konzerthaus Freiburg , the Liederhalle Stuttgart and the Berlin Philharmonic . The FBO is on international concert tours and is now considered "one of the best early music ensembles in the world".

In addition to recordings and performances of the eponymous music of the Baroque period, there are also works from the Classical and Romantic periods on the program, and there are also “excursions” into New Music (e.g. Donaueschinger Musiktage 2006).

The FBO performs in major concert halls around the world (including Wigmore Hall , Lincoln Center , Concertgebouw Amsterdam , Palau de la Música Catalana , Cologne Philharmonie , Wiener Musikverein , Philharmonie de Paris ), often together with artists such as Christian Gerhaher , Philippe Jaroussky , Cecilia Bartoli , Thomas Quasthoff or the RIAS Chamber Choir . It is supported by soloists such as the specialists for historical keyboard instruments Andreas Staier , Kristian Bezuidenhout or Alexander Melnikow as well as the violinist Isabelle Faust and the viol player Hille Perl .

The baroque violinist Gottfried von der Goltz and the pianist and harpsichordist Kristian Bezuidenhout share the artistic direction. The orchestra is also regularly led by renowned guest conductors such as René Jacobs , Trevor Pinnock , Philippe Herreweghe , Ton Koopman , Ivor Bolton and Pablo Heras-Casado .

A small formation, the Freiburg Baroque Consort, prefers chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The repertoire includes works by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber , Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Antonio Bertali .

Numerous CD recordings, including compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach , Georg Friedrich Händel , Antonio Vivaldi , Georg Philipp Telemann , Joseph Haydn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Franz Schubert , Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , were recorded. The orchestra publishes on the French label harmonia mundi and the label of the Carus publishing house . Several of these recordings have received awards. In 2013 the ensemble played the orchestral part in a production of Idomeneo produced for television , directed by Stéphan Aubé, with Gaëlle Arquez and Sophie Karthäuser among others .

Since May 2012, the orchestra and Ensemble recherche have been based in the newly built Ensemblehaus Freiburg with office and rehearsal rooms next to the old town hall and in the vicinity of the Freiburg University of Music . The legal form is a society under civil law .
