Christian Gerhaher (born July 24, 1969 in Straubing , Lower Bavaria ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ) and singing teacher. Gerhaher holds a professorship for singing and oratorio at the University of Music and Theater in Munich .

Life

During his studies with Paul Kuën and Raimund Grumbach, Christian Gerhaher attended the opera school of the Munich University of Music . Together with his regular piano partner Gerold Huber , he also studied song singing there with Helmut Deutsch and rounded off his vocal training in master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh . He is now a teacher himself, teaches in master classes or gives workshops at the Munich University of Music as part of an honorary professorship.

Several recordings together with Gerold Huber were awarded prizes: Her recording of Winterreise received the Echo Klassik 2002 for the best song recording and in autumn 2003 she received the Record Geijutsu Magazine Award from the most important Japanese trade journal. Her CD with Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin (Arte Nova) was honored with the Echo Klassik 2004, also for the best song recording. Her CD Abendbilder received the Gramophone Award 2006.

In 1998 Christian Gerhaher completed his medical studies and won the Prix International Pro Musicis Paris / New York that same year. Shortly afterwards he made his first solo debuts a. a. in the chamber music hall of Carnegie Hall . Since then he has appeared in all international song centers, including the London Wigmore Hall , the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Paris Musée d'Orsay , the Cologne and Berlin Philharmonics , Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Alte Oper Frankfurt and is a guest at such renowned festivals as the Schwetzingen Festival , the Rheingau Music Festival , the Wiener Festwochen and the Sound Arch Festival , the Edinburgh Festival and the Lucerne Festival . In 2006 he made his debut at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival with a recital, where he was awarded the 2006 NDR Music Prize.

In addition to his extensive work in the concert and lied sector, he takes part in selected opera productions: in 2005 he took on the title role in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Frankfurt Opera , for which he received rave reviews. In 2006 he made his first appearance at the Salzburg Festival as Papageno under Riccardo Muti . In January 2007 he made his debut as Wolfram in Richard Wagner's Tannhauser and the Singers' War at the Wartburg at the Frankfurt Opera: "Christian Gerhaher's Wolfram was the event of the evening: a supple, timbred baritone of seldom noble, finely shaded expressiveness." (Frankfurter Rundschau, January 30, 2007). Shortly afterwards, in April 2007, he made his debut at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in a staging by Robert Wilson of Bach's St. John Passion under Emmanuelle Haïm . As Wolfram von Eschenbach, he performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid in 2009 and at the Vienna State Opera in 2010 .

His collaboration with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Neville Marriner , Helmuth Rilling , Heinz Holliger , Trevor Pinnock , Riccardo Muti , Simon Rattle , Kent Nagano , Riccardo Chailly , Mariss Jansons , Christian Thielemann , Daniel Harding and Gustavo Dudamel lead him to the major concert halls in the world. The important orchestras that Christian Gerhaher regularly invite include the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Concentus Musicus Wien , the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic or the Concertgebouw Orchestra . He is also a guest with major orchestras outside Europe, such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra , the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Cleveland Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . With the latter he performed Brahms' German Requiem under Kent Nagano in May 2007 .

Christian Gerhaher is an exclusive artist at Sony Music (before August 2008 RCA Red Seal). His debut CD on this label contains Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe and selected songs. In July 2005 Mendelssohn's Elias was released with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Herbert Blomstedt and in January 2006 his CD with mixed Schubert songs was released under the title Abendbilder . All of his earlier CDs have also been released by BMG labels: Arte Nova has all of the Schubert cycles available as CD boxes. Further recordings on this label include Brahms' Vier Ernst Gesänge and Frank Martin's Jedermann monologues as well as Mahler's Kindertotenlieder and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesänge . Christian Gerhaher recorded Haydn's Creation and Orlando paladino under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi , with which also recordings of Bach's Christmas Oratorio , Die Jahreszeiten von Haydn (both German Harmonia Mundi) and Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri on RCA Red Seal have appeared. In August 2007 Deutsche Grammophon released a duo CD with Anne Sofie von Otter with music that was written in the Theresienstadt concentration camp . Unitel has released a German Requiem by Johannes Brahms with the Munich Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann on DVD. In March 2008 another song CD with Schumann settings was released under the title Melancholie . In September of the same year, Hänssler published Benjamin Britten's War Requiem under the direction of Helmuth Rilling, with Annette Dasch , James Taylor and Christian Gerhaher. In 2009 recordings of Haydn's Seasons under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and in April of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with Kent Nagano were presented. October 2013 Gerhaher sang in the Vienna Konzerthaus in Vienna to by him Jörg Widmann composed song cycle The hot heart for the first time.

On July 23, 2015 Christian Gerhaher was awarded the title Bayerischer Kammersänger in Munich .
