Hille Perl (actually: Hildegard Perl ; * 1965 in Bremen ) is a German gambist who is known throughout Europe as an interpreter of music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Life

Hille Perl grew up in a musical family. Her father, the musicologist, harpsichordist and organist Helmut Perl, studied Mozart intensively and already gave his daughter a small viola da gamba. Hille Perl first took lessons from Niklas Trüstedt in Berlin and later studied in Hamburg with Pere Ros and Ingrid Stampa . She graduated from the Academy for Early Music in Bremen with Jaap ter Linden and Sarah Cunningham in 1990. During her training, Hille Perl received important suggestions from Wieland Kuijken and Jordi Savall . Since 2002 she has been teaching students at the Bremen University of the Arts in instruments of the viol family.

Her daughter Marthe Perl (* 1983) and her niece Sarah Perl (* 1977) are also gambists.

Artistic work

In addition to her concert activities, since 1997 she has released numerous recordings for the labels Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Sony BMG as well as the German independent label Carpe Diem Records .

Hille Perl concerts with ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble . She appears as a soloist or in a duo with her long-time partner Lee Santana , with whom she has been working since 1984. In 2001, together with him and Steve Player, she founded the Los Otros ensemble , which has since undertaken numerous national and international guest tours and recorded several albums.

Hille Perl also works with many other artists and appears in several other formations. The Sirius Viols is a viol ensemble, occasionally supplemented with other instruments or vocals, which among other things has set out to "try out different musical ideas or approaches" and in which former or current students of Hille Perl can often be found. Under Why Not Here she got together with her viol player colleague Friederike Heumann and under the name The Age Of Passions with the musicians Petra Müllejans (baroque violin ), Lee Santana (lute, theorbo and Colascione) and Karl Kaiser (transverse flute). Since 2005 she has been playing in the baroque trio with Lee Santana and the recorder player Maurice Steger . In this combination, as well as with her other projects, she regularly receives extremely positive feedback from the public and the press.

Hille Perl has brought concertante viol music in Germany and beyond again into focus. Today she is one of the most internationally successful German viol players. In particular, her “virtuoso playing full of passion, seriousness and lightness at the same time” as well as her talent for improvisation are recognized.

Christian Kurt Weisz shot a 43-minute documentary about the musician's work with the title Hille Perl and the Queen of String Instruments , which the TV channel Arte first broadcast on July 24, 2011. In the 2017 film Happy End by Michael Haneke , she played a supporting role as a viol player.
