Happy End is a French - German - Austrian coproduction from 2017 . The film , directed by Michael Haneke , premiered on May 22, 2017 as part of the 70th Cannes International Film Festival , where the film was invited to the Palme d' Or competition . In Germany, the premiere took place at the Munich Film Festival on June 25, 2017. The cinema release took place in Austria on October 6, 2017 and in Germany on October 12, 2017. The first broadcast on Arte took place on May 20, 2020.

The film chronologically shows the fortunes of the upper-class French Laurent family over a period of several months, with a number of different storylines interwoven.

  • Georges Laurent is the aged head of the family who suffers from the onset of dementia. Former head of the family construction company, he withdrew from it years ago to take care of his sick wife, whose years of suffering he ended by suffocating her. He is now suicidal himself and repeatedly makes unsuccessful attempts at suicide. He lives with the rest of the family on the family estate in Calais , where the North African-born Rachid and Jamila are employed as domestic staff .
  • His daughter Anne Laurent runs the construction company, which is in trouble after a serious construction site accident in which a worker was killed. She is the dominant mother of her only son Pierre , who, additionally inhibited by a speech impediment, disappoints his mother's expectations of a future company boss. When Pierre visits the family of the slain worker, he is beaten up by his son, which Anne uses to force an out-of-court settlement on the bereaved. She sold the company to a consortium represented by the British businessman Lawrence Bradshaw , her lover, to whom she soon became engaged. Pierre rebels ever more strongly against his mother and the morality of his family, moves out of the family villa and, as a highlight, brings a group of African refugees from the Calais jungle to his mother's engagement party .
  • Georges' son Thomas Laurent left the company at an early age and moved to the south of France as a doctor. He left his first wife, with whom he had daughter Eve , after a few years and moved back home. There he now has a baby with his current wife Anaïs , but starts a new relationship with a musician. Thomas' first wife has become depressed over the years. The 13-year-old Eve who lives with her, who doesn't like her self-centered mother, is responsible for dying of a drug overdose, which is generally regarded as suicide. Thomas now brings Eve to his family in Calais, with whom Eve strangers. Eve quickly discovers her father's new double life. After her own suicide attempt, she gains a certain trust in her previously unknown grandpa, Georges.

The film ends with Georges, sitting in a wheelchair, letting Eve push him over a ferry ramp to the sea on the sidelines of the engagement party. Eve films with his cell phone how he releases the brake and rolls into the water. Before he reaches the deeper water, his family rushes to help.

Production and Background

After the success of his previous film Love , Haneke originally wanted to make a film about an overweight woman in America. The shooting in the USA would have been too expensive and he could not find a suitable actress there, in France or Germany. At the happy end , Haneke excited the renewed collaboration with love actor Jean-Louis Trintignant . In an interview conducted in September 2016, he briefly provided information about the general plot: “It [the film] is set in Calais, in a middle-class milieu, and the fate of the people is affected by migrants and asylum seekers - just as we are all affected . Until the whole thing then escalates. ”A year earlier, in September 2015, Haneke and 3,000 other European filmmakers supported the online petition“ For a Thousand Lives: Be Human. ”, Which criticized the European Union's asylum policy .

With Happy End , Haneke competed for the seventh time in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d'Or, which he had already received in 2009 for The White Ribbon - A German Children's Story and in 2012 for Love . It was the eighth film that he presented in Cannes.

The film was invited to the main competition at the Sydney Film Festival , where it was screened from June 10, 2017.
