Johannes Schenck (born June 3, 1660 in Amsterdam , † after 1712 in Düsseldorf ) was a German- Dutch composer and viol player .

Life

Johannes Schenck (also Johan Schenk) was a son of the wine merchant Wijnant Schenk from Cologne and Catharina Kempius from Gladbeck and was baptized Catholic in the Mozes en Aäronkerk . In 1680 Schenck married Geertruyd Hamel in the Nieuwe Kerk . Until 1696 he lived in Amsterdam, where he a. a. worked with the poet Govert Bidloo .

In 1686 Schenck composed the first opera based on a Dutch libretto - the Singspiel Opera op de Zinspreuk "Zonder Spys en Wyn, Kan geen Liefde zyn" ("Opera based on the motto 'Without food' and wine there can be no 'love'") with the Subtitle or motto “Sine Cerere & Baccho friget Venus” (“Without Ceres and Bacchus, Venus freezes”, analogous translation including: “Love cannot flourish without food and without wine”). In 1687 Schenck published 28 arias of his opera in an arrangement for voice and basso continuo under the title Eenige / GEZANGEN / uit de opera van / Bacchus, Ceres, en Venus. / Gesteld door / Joan Schenk (“Some chants from the opera about Bacchus, Ceres and Venus, composed by Joan Schenk”, contained in op. 1), from which the title of the version of the opera Bacchus, Ceres and Venus derives; the original sheet music for the opera has not been preserved.

In 1696 Schenck was appointed chamber musician to the court of Count Palatine Jan Wellem , who himself was an enthusiastic viol player, in Düsseldorf. The Düsseldorf court opera flourished under its conductor Sebastiano Moratelli , and so Schenck met important composers and musicians of his time here, including Georg Friedrich Händel , Francesco Maria Veracini , Silvius Leopold Weiss and the castrato Benedetto Baldassari. Schenck's later compositions were influenced by these encounters.

Schenck maintained contact with Amsterdam through his publisher, Estienne Roger . Arcangelo Corelli's influence becomes clear in his late work, for example in the sonata collection L'Echo du Danube . Schenck's last written mention can be found in a document from the Düsseldorf court secretary from 1709.

The oil painting by Constantin Netscher (1668–1723) depicting Johannes Schenck with a viol was made before 1696; it is located in the Museum of Fine Arts in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Blois . After this painting, Peter Schenk the Elder (not a relative of the musician) made an undated copper engraving, which already shows the older musician Johannes Schenck and differs in some details from his original.
