The Mozes en Aäronkerk ( Mose and Aaron Church ; officially St. Antonius Church) is a Roman Catholic church on Waterlooplein in Amsterdam , which is now mainly used as an event center.

history

In the first centuries after the Reformation , public Roman Catholic worship was banned in Amsterdam. Since 1649, the Franciscans (OFM) have held Saints in a town house converted into a house church . Fair ; soon the neighboring house was also included. This pair of houses was called Moyses en Aäron after the Old Testament brothers ; the name passed on to the house church and its successors and replaced the Antonius patronage in popular parlance .

The house church was expanded and architecturally upgraded in the 17th and 18th centuries, but remained without a tower and hidden behind the two gables. Only when the restrictions on Catholic worship were lifted at the turn of the 19th century did the Franciscans plan a representative new building on the same site, which could be realized as the Water State Church from 1837–1841 based on a design by Tieleman Franciscus Suys .

Building

The church is a classicist three-aisled hall church with a retracted rectangular choir . In front of the brick building is a portal front made of light-colored stone, modeled on an ancient temple, the ridge of which bears a statue of the blessing Christ; there are two two-story lantern towers on either side . The choir is also clad on the outside with an antique, light-colored gable.

Furnishing

The interior, which is kept entirely in white, is dominated by a large baroque altar that comes from the previous building.

organ

The organ was built in 1871 by the Adema brothers (Leeuwarden) in 1871. Some of the pipes were supplied by the organ builder Cavaillé Coll. The instrument was last restored in 1993–1994 by the Flentrop organ building company . The instrument has 48 registers on three manuals and a pedal. Each individual work is divided into basic parts and combination registers.
