Waterlooplatz (1975)

The Waterlooplein is a square in the Groot Waterloo district of the Dutch capital, Amsterdam . A flea market is held six days a week at the square and the adjacent Zwanenburgwal . There are around 300 stalls there. The market is closed on Sunday.

The Waterlooplein, named after the Battle of Waterloo , was created in 1882 when the Leprozengracht and Houtgracht were filled in. In 1893 the Jewish traders in the nearby Jodenbreestraat and Sint Antoniebreestraat were instructed by the city council to move their market stalls here, and the resulting market was open every day except on the Sabbath . There are some folk songs about the place. Not far from the Platz are Het Muziektheater , popularly known as Stopera, and the Blauwbrug , a bridge over the Amstel River .
Until the Second World War, the Waterlooplein belonged to the Jodenbuurt ("Jewish Quarter") in Amsterdam.
