Heribert Schulmeyer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heribert Schulmeyer (* 1954 ) is a German illustrator and comic artist living in Cologne .

Schulmeyer studied free graphics and illustration at the Cologne Werkschulen (FH Kunst und Design), among others with Heinz Edelmann and Daniel Spoerri .

comics

Schulmeyer's comics appeared mainly in the 1980s in German underground magazines such as Zomix or Rad! . His drawing style stands out clearly from that of his colleagues (including Hansi Kiefersauer , Volker Reiche , Rolf Boyke , Brösel , Thomas M. Bunk , Gerhard Seyfried ), who are strongly influenced by American drawing schools - by the subculture ( Robert Crumb , Gilbert Shelton , Bill Griffith etc.) to the mainstream (Funnies, Al Taliaferro , Carl Barks etc.). Schulmeyer is more in the tradition of illustrators from the 19th century; he strokes carefully, maintains a clean, detailed picture structure, his panel arrangement is rather conservative; but he has a brisk line. Most of his stories can best be described as fables , enlivened by speaking people and animals alike, told in a light, calm tone with subliminal humor.

While he published his comics in adult-oriented publications, they were equally understandable for children. In the 2000s, only stories that directly addressed children or a young audience were published.

Books

Schulmeyer is active for various publishers, mainly in the field of youth and children's books; for example, he is in charge of the Leselöwen ( Loewe Verlag ) and Lesabe ( Ravensburger , also the quarterly magazine of the same name) series; or as a copywriter and draftsman the Pixi series Hansi Hase ( Carlsen ). Authors with whom he regularly works as an illustrator are Rüdiger Bertram , Manfred Mai and Christian Tielmann . Furthermore, countless book covers come from his pen.

Movie

Schulmeyer works for the WDR , including Die Sendung mit der Maus .

In addition to Theo Kerp , he was the main illustrator of the German-French co-production Jim Knopf (animated television series, 52 episodes, 2000–2001).

theatre

In 1984, Schulmeyer and six other people (including Theo Kerp, Herbert Rosner) founded the artist group Kölner Kästchentreffen , which is dedicated to paper theater .

free art

From the end of the 1990s on, Schulmeyer also appeared as a freelance artist. His works are mostly a kind of playful small sculpture. He works mainly with clay, paper / cardboard and handicraft items / toys.
