Anna Viebrock
Anna Viebrock (born August 3, 1951 in Cologne ) is a German stage and costume designer and director .
Life and accomplishments
Anna Viebrock grew up in Frankfurt am Main as the daughter of a mother from Austria and Hungary and a father from Northern Germany . After initially studying German, art history and philosophy at the university there, she studied set design from 1971 to 1977 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Karl Kneidl . In 1976 she gave birth to her daughter.
She had her first engagement as a set and costume design assistant at the Schauspiel Frankfurt with Karl Kneidl and Wilfried Minks . In the late 1980s and early 1990s she developed her unmistakable style in collaboration with directors Jossi Wieler and Christoph Marthaler . The years 1988 to 1993 at the Stadttheater Basel , where the first works with Christoph Marthaler were created, were formative. From 1993 to 1999 Viebrock was head of equipment at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. From 2000 to 2004 she was part of the management team of the Zurich Schauspielhaus with Marthaler and the chief dramaturge Stefanie Carp .
In Zurich in 2002, Viebrock's first own production hit the shipbuilding stage with “In vain or Reproduction prohibited”. Since then, she has also directed her own work in Basel, Cologne, Berlin and Paris. In 2005 she staged her first opera at the Hanover State Opera.
Since October 2013 she has been a professor for stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna .
Awards
In 1994, 1996 and 1997 she was voted “Set Designer of the Year” by Theater heute and in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998 as “Costume Designer of the Year”. In 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2016 she was voted “Set Designer of the Year” in the Opernwelt's critics' survey and “Costume Designer of the Year” in 2002, 2008 and 2016. The state of Hesse honored her with the Hessian Culture Prize in 1997, the Berlin Theater Prize in 2004 and the Hein Heckroth Stage Design Prize in 2013 . In 2010 she received a practical scholarship at Villa Massimo in Rome. She received the Zurich Festival Prize 2015.
Works
She often develops her stage sets based on real models that she discovers on research trips. Her trademark are spaces in which life has left traces; it is always interiors, mostly claustrophobic.
