Karl Kneidl

Karl Kneidl (born August 22, 1940 in Nuremberg ) is a German stage and costume designer , theater director and opera director .

Live and act

Kneidl became a student of the Swiss painter and set designer Ambrosius Humm in 1956 and completed an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and cabinet maker in his native town from 1957 to 1959. In 1959 he began his artistic career at the student theater in Erlangen, which was then directed by Dieter Sturm .

From 1962 to 1968 he was a set designer and assistant to Max Fritzsche at the Schauspielhaus Bochum . There he met Niels-Peter Rudolph , for whose productions at various theaters he created the sets. He designed sets for the directors Hansjörg Utzerath , Dieter Giesing , Ulrich Heising , Hans-Joachim Heyse and Claus Peymann .

Other directors with whom Kneidl worked on numerous performances at various theaters were Hans Neuenfels , Max Peter Ammann , Franz Xaver Kroetz , Fritz Marquardt , Christof Nel , Frank Hoffmann and especially Peter Palitzsch and Peter Zadek .

In addition to his work as a set designer, Kneidl repeatedly worked as a theater director himself. His first directorial work was in 1973 Jewgenij Schwarz ' Die Schneekönigin at the Stuttgart State Theater . In 1982 he made his debut as an opera director at the Frankfurt Opera with Gluck's Alkestis .

Many performances in which Kneidl was responsible for the stage design were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen , for the first time in 1965 with music by Frank Wedekind .

From 1961 to 1986 he was married to the photographer Helga Claus . Since 1986 he is in a second marriage with the actress and author Emine Sevgi Özdamar . Karl Kneidl is the father of three daughters.

Teaching

From 1974 to 2008 he was a professor of stage design at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he trained numerous stage designers over the years in a practical process, including Ivan Bazak , Katrin Brack , Timo Dentler , Okarina Peter, Martin Kukulies , Ruth Groß, Aurel Lenfert , Hartmut Ritzerfeld and Anna Viebrock , Oliver Kostecka , Jasna Bošnjak, Sabine Mader, Gregor Wickert, Philipp Fröhlich , Monika Frenz, Jörg Zysik, Ana Tasic, Joanna Surowiec, Karla Fehlenberg.
